Bioassays
are very important in the screening of candidate
plants for drug development. The simple, rapid
and cost effective nature of bioassays facilitates
screening of large number of samples. Plants
effective in in-vitro assays are developed
into prototypes, which ultimately get tested
in in-vivo assays. In-vitro assays are also
helpful in biological standardization of herbal
extracts. Botanical products are complex with
respect to their chemical composition. It
is observed that a given herbal product may
have required level of marker compound but
the bioactivity may be unacceptable. This
indicates that chemical standardization of
herbal products is not comprehensive; hence
there is a need for bioassay based standardization
of herbal products. Bioassays developed by
this lab are also useful in stability testing
of herbal products. The bioassay lab has developed
more than 25 assays and has made many international
publications using them. Some of the assays
developed in this lab include Acetylcholinesterase
inhibition assay, Hepatoprotective assay,
Brine shrimp lethality assay, Trypsin inhibition
assay etc. |
